The Civic

Since early March, the events industry has been mostly without work.

All kinds of major events are currently prohibited due to the COVID-19 crisis. Corporate events, conferences, concerts, festivals, weddings, trade shows and theatrical performances are no longer able to go ahead.

This is leaving an entire industry dormant, with over twenty-five thousand businesses and over half a million workers throughout the UK directly suffering the ill effects.

Over 500 companies from all across the events industry, as well as event locations, (event centres, convention centres, conference hotels, theatres, concert halls, playhouses and nightclubs) are joining together tonight (the 6th of July 2020) in lighting our venues Red in order to draw attention to the dramatic situation in the event industry.

Whilst we welcome the rescue package from the Government, we await clarification about what this means for freelancers, suppliers and those in the wider theatrical and events industry. We also await further details on who will be eligible, how the application process will be managed, and by whom - as this will change how the fund is allocated.

But more importantly we await a timetable of when we, as a venue, can start to reopen again.

#lightitinred

If you wish to see the venue lit like this tonight, the lights will be on from around 9pm which is approx half an hour before sunset. These photos were taken between 10pm-10:30pm when the sky was getting dark enough to make the colours stand out.
The venue was lit by our volunteers.
