During March, 2006 Stourport was officially recognised by the Fairtrade Foundation as a Fairtrade Town. It was only the second town in Worcestershire to gain that status, Malvern being the first. A very successful launch event was held in the Civic Hall on 10th March with Dr Richard Taylor, MP, the Chairman of Wyre Forest District Council and the Mayor of Stourport present.
Fairtrade is an alternative approach to conventional world trade. It is a partnership between producers and consumers benefiting both. Fairtrade ensures workers in the developing world get a fair wage and producers gain better access to markets. It encourages sustainable and long term development. Buying products with a Fairtrade mark guarantees a better deal for Third World producers.
Fairtrade ensures a just price that covers producers’ costs, a premium for producers to invest in their communities – clean water, health care, education and environment, plus long term financial security of contracts.
More than 2000 products carry the Fairtrade mark including coffee, tea, fruit, chocolate, fruit juice, sugar, honey and wine in addition to craft items and clothing. Achieving Fairtrade Town Status is the beginning – not the end.
We need to continue our efforts to achieve genuine Fairtrade and we seek your help. We ask you to consider if you are a local business, organisation or school, that you are stocking or using Fairtrade products and displaying a small sticker to indicate your support.
If you are a customer, seeking out Fairtrade goods and buying them, and encouraging others to do the same.
